Americano

Americano is the most popular social tournament format in padel and is increasingly used in tennis. Players enter as individuals and are paired with a different partner each round, facing a different pair of opponents. Every point won counts toward an individual leaderboard, so even in a losing pair you benefit from every point you win. The rotation is predetermined before the event starts so that by the end, every player has partnered with every other player once. Americano is beloved for its social nature - you get to play with everyone - and its inherent fairness.

• Players enter individually. The minimum is 4 players (1 court); 8 players (2 courts) is the sweet spot.
• A rotation schedule determines pairings for each round. In a full Americano with N players, there are N-1 rounds.
• Each match is played to a fixed point total (commonly 16, 24, or 32 points). Rally-point scoring is used: the winning pair of each rally scores a point, regardless of who served.
• When a match ends (e.g. 18-14 in a 32-point match), each player on the winning side gets 18 points and each player on the losing side gets 14 points.
• After all rounds, the player with the highest cumulative point total wins.
• The final round is often special: the 1st and 4th-ranked players are paired against the 2nd and 3rd, ensuring a dramatic finish.

1. Confirm participant numbers. Ideally a multiple of 4. For odd numbers, players sit out one round each (distribute sit-outs evenly).
2. Generate the rotation schedule using an app or pre-made template.
3. Set the points per match - 16 for short games (~10 min), 24 for medium (~15 min), 32 for longer (~20 min).
4. Brief all players on the format before starting. Explain that individual points matter, not just wins.
5. Display the schedule and scoreboard prominently. Update after every round.
6. Keep rounds moving quickly. When one court finishes, they should wait for all courts to finish before the next round.
7. Run the final round with leaderboard-based pairings for a climactic finish.
8. Announce results - winner, runner-up, and any fun awards (best comeback, etc.).

Social evenings, club mix-ins, padel events, new member welcome events, any gathering of 8-20 players.

• Works best when all players are of broadly similar ability. If there's a wide skill gap, consider Mexicano instead.
• A typical Americano with 8 players on 2 courts takes about 2 hours.
• Ensure players understand that every point counts - even in a losing match.
