Mexicano

Mexicano is a dynamic variant of Americano that adjusts pairings after each round based on the current leaderboard. Instead of a pre-set rotation, the format uses results to match players of similar performance together: the top-ranked player pairs with the 4th-ranked against the 2nd and 3rd, and so on down the leaderboard. This self-balancing mechanism means that after a couple of rounds, strong players face each other and developing players compete against similarly-ranked opponents, making virtually every match competitive and close.

• The first round is random (or seeded by the organiser).
• After each round, players are re-ranked by total points accumulated.
• The next round's pairings are generated from the updated leaderboard: players ranked 1st and 4th are paired against 2nd and 3rd. Players ranked 5th and 8th are paired against 6th and 7th. And so on.
• Matches use the same rally-point scoring as Americano (to 16, 24, or 32 points).
• Individual points accumulate across all rounds.
• You can keep adding rounds for as long as you have court time.
• The player with the most total points at the end wins.

1. Confirm player numbers. Works with any number from 8 upward. Ideal if divisible by 4.
2. Set up a scoring system - an app is highly recommended since pairings must be recalculated after every round.
3. Run the first round with random pairings.
4. After each round, update the leaderboard and generate the next round's pairings based on current standings.
5. Display the updated leaderboard between rounds so players can see where they stand.
6. Continue for as many rounds as time allows. There is no fixed number of rounds - more rounds produce more accurate rankings.
7. Announce the final standings after the last round.

Mixed-ability groups, padel social sessions, club events where you want competitive matches regardless of skill differences.

• Requires a digital tool or app for practical management - manual calculation between rounds is slow and error-prone.
• Unlike Americano, you are NOT guaranteed to partner with every other player.
