Pyramid League
A wider base narrows to a single player at the top - challenge upward to climb, with more opponents available the higher you go.
Pick this if you like the ladder idea but want more ways to climb.

Overview
The pyramid league is a variation of the challenge ladder. Instead of a linear ranking, players are arranged in a pyramid shape: one player at the top, two on the next row, three on the next, and so on. Players can challenge anyone on the row directly above them. Winners swap positions with the person they beat. The pyramid structure means players at lower levels have more potential opponents and more opportunities to climb, while the top of the pyramid is increasingly exclusive.
How it works
- Players are arranged in pyramid tiers: 1 at the top, 2 on the second row, 3 on the third, etc.
- A player may challenge anyone on the row directly above them.
- If the challenger wins, they swap positions with the player they beat.
- If the challenged player wins, positions remain unchanged.
- A player at the top of the pyramid has no one to challenge and can only be challenged by those on the second row.
Running one, step by step
- Determine the pyramid size. For 15 players: rows of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. For 10 players: rows of 1, 2, 3, 4.
- Place players by ability (strongest at the top) or randomly.
- Display the pyramid visually at the club and online.
- Set challenge rules - deadline to accept, match format, what happens on a decline.
- Update the pyramid after each match and republish.
- Run for a set season with a prize for the player at the peak at the season end.
Best for
Clubs that want the engagement of a challenge system with more visual appeal and broader challenge options than a simple ladder.
Things to watch out for
- The top player can only defend, never challenge. Some rules allow the top player to challenge anyone to keep them active.
- Like ladders, the format depends on player engagement. Monitor activity closely.
Can you run it on ClubChamps?
ClubChamps does not run this format yet. This guide is here because it is worth knowing about - not because we can host it for you.
